This journal posts updates on how I'm managing stage III undifferentiated Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) and its treatments.
NPC is cancer (malignant tumor) of the nasopharynx, an area in the back of the nose/upper throat that's below the skull base and above the soft palate. It's an extremely rare cancer for caucasians like myself and is inoperable because of its location; it requires both chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.
I'm 27 years old and live in the Kansas City area. My treatments started in July 2003 and should last until February 2004; they consist of extremely high doses of both radiotherapy (IMRT) and chemotherapy (Cisplatin), followed by treatments of chemotherapy alone (Cisplatin and 5FU).
My first symptoms were excessive nosebleeds and enlarged, hard neck lymphnodes. Because I'm stage III (meaning it has spread to my neck lymphnodes), the doses are much higher and have more side-effects than it would be for those with stage I or II NPC. Although this type of cancer is very deadly, because of my young age my oncologist and radiologist are both convinced I'll pull through like a pro and give me a positive diagnosis.
My journal tracks my progress (through good and bad) so my friends and family around the globe know how I'm doing and so people interested in NPC can learn more about the treatments and experiences that occur when dealing with NPC.
I include links to resources as I find them.
